Protect Your Teeth with Fluoride
Cavities are created when plaque bacteria and sugars come together and sit in the mouth producing an acid-like byproduct that erodes the enamel on our teeth.
What Does Fluoride Do?
Fluoride on the other hand, is a mineral that bonds to the enamel of our teeth and makes it more difficult for the enamel to become eroded and expose the tooth to a cavity.
The Benefits of Fluoride
For young children (6 - 16) the use of a fluoride toothpaste can actually help make the permanent teeth more resistant to cavities.
Don't worry though! Adults can still benefit from fluoride too; even in adult teeth, fluoride helps fight decay and strengthens tooth enamel.
Fluoride Comes in Many Forms
Did you know that fluoride is actually a natural mineral that can be found in some of the foods we eat and the water we drink?
There are several ways we can ensure we get this enamel-strengthening mineral on our teeth:
- Use a fluoride toothpaste
- Swish with a mouth rinse containing fluoride
- Visit us at Hammond & Proctor for a concentrated fluoride foam treatment
Fluoride Is Not A Replacement For Brushing & Flossing
Brushing and flossing are the best methods to avoid cavities and keep your gums healthy and your oral health up!
So What is Fluoride Used For?
Fluoride is a positive addition to these two items that can further defend the enamel against cavities and decay; it should not, however, be a replacement for brushing or flossing.
For questions regarding fluoride, which form is best for you, or how often to use it, get an appointment with us at Hammond & Proctor! Every mouth is different and we can provide you the kind of information and daily regimen you need for your unique mouth.
How Much Fluoride Is Too Much?
I’ve heard fluoride is bad for your teeth, is this true!?
There really is such a thing as too much fluoride! So it is important to follow the guidelines given to you by our staff.
While fluoride is perfectly safe when used correctly, toxic levels can cause something called fluorosis. Fluorosis can cause:
- defects in the tooth's enamel
- patches or streaks across a tooth
- severe fluorosis can even cause brown colors, streaks, and patches on the teeth
Most commonly fluorosis is only seen in young children where the correct time and dose of fluoride has not been properly accounted for. But it is possible to affect any age.
